1. What the app uses, and why
Location
For turn-by-turn navigation, address suggestions near you, speed limits and local weather. With "Always" allowed, navigation keeps working while your phone is locked. You can turn location off in your phone's settings; navigation and weather then stop working.
Bluetooth
To connect to your gauge. The link is between your phone and your gauge only.
Notifications (iPhone)
If you allow it, iOS shares call, text and app alerts with the gauge directly over Bluetooth so it can show them. They go from your iPhone to the gauge and nowhere else. The gauge shows them and doesn't keep them after it powers off. The app doesn't read your notifications.
Your car's data
The gauge reads engine data and check-engine codes from your car's OBD-II port and sends them to the app over Bluetooth. They stay on your phone and gauge. Nothing about your car is sent to us.
Siri and Lock Screen
Siri commands and widgets run on your iPhone. We don't receive them.
2. What is stored, and where
- On your phone: settings, favourite and recent destinations, recordings, Performance runs and the last check-engine report. Deleting the app deletes all of it. You can also delete recordings and runs one at a time in the app.
- On your gauge: settings such as theme, screens and units. "Reset gauge to factory settings" in the app erases them.
- With us: nothing from the app. We have no servers that store your data.
3. Services your phone talks to
These services receive a location or a search, along with your phone's internet address, as any website would. Each has its own privacy policy.
- Routing: the OSRM route service (router.project-osrm.org) gets your starting point and destination to work out a route.
- Address search: Photon by komoot (photon.komoot.io) and Nominatim by the OpenStreetMap Foundation (nominatim.openstreetmap.org) get what you type and your approximate area, to suggest places near you.
- Speed limits and map data: OpenStreetMap Overpass servers (such as overpass-api.de) get the area around you.
- Weather: our weather server, run on Cloudflare, gets your location rounded to about 1 km and asks OpenWeather for the forecast. The rounded location is kept only in a short cache (about 10 minutes) so nearby requests share one answer. Nothing is logged or saved.
- Gauge updates: when you check for updates, the app downloads the update list and files from aetherworksengineering.com.
4. This website
- The site is hosted by Cloudflare, which processes visits (such as your internet address) to deliver and protect the site.
- Fonts load from Google Fonts, which receives your internet address.
- The sign-up form is provided by our newsletter provider, beehiiv, and loads from their servers. If you join the list, your email address is kept by beehiiv and used only to tell you about AetherGauge. Every email has an unsubscribe link.
- We don't use advertising or tracking cookies.
5. Children
AetherGauge is made for drivers. We don't knowingly collect information from children under 13.
6. Changes
If this policy changes, we'll update it here and change the date at the top. A big change will also be noted in the app's update notes.
